hey everyone - its been a while- but thats because over here at mtvU we’re getting ready to launch into the next semester. i’m crafting my setlists to have old and new music that you guys will appreciate, and we’re making pretty amazing Freshmen episodes for the fall.
I haven’t, of course, forgotten to do my usual research. There are two songs that i’m obsessing over right now.
The first is a Royksopp song off of their album, The Understanding, and is entitled “What Else Is There?”. The song has vocals by… you guessed it… Karin Dreijer Andersson of THE KNIFE. The pairing of these two creates a more even and ambient sound than the knife, but takes Karin’s passionate and dramatic vocals. The lyrics are tragic and desperate, yet the melody is somewhat optimistic, though in a minor key. Many remixes (the vitalic one is especially interesting) have been made of “What Else Is There?” and you should check them out on The Hype Machine - which is an incredible blog aggregator… if you haven’t seen it yet, you better go now.
The second song i’ve been loving is by a new trio called Peter Bjorn and John. Their single, “Young Folks” off of their new album, Writers Block, and features Victoria Bergsman. Its a gorgeous track with simple duets that give me the shivers bc they’re so beautiful. Definitely check out the remixes on this one as well - they’re pretty interesting, though i definitely like the original the best by far. Also check out their song, Amsterdam. It’s a little more intense but definitely pretty cool. I’m soooo loving this band right now. And I also just found out that they’re from Sweden. Like, are you KIDDING ME!??!?! Why is every good song I hear from Sweden?!?!? Welll, thats not true - Royksopp is from Norway. I gotta get over there…
Ok until next time. Check out Peter Bjorn and John, and if you haven’t yet, check out Royksopp’s “what else is there?”.
And for those of you who wanted to see THE KNIFE on Nov 1… it’s SOLD OUT!!!! already… oh man.
