Let’s talk about genres. Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Pop Punk, Neo Christian, Electroclash… the list goes on. But every once in a while comes a band that defies the boundaries of the box we call new music, and makes us proud to not place it in a category. Last week, I had the fortune of going to see MGMT (the brainchild of Andrew Vanwyngarden of Memphis and Ben Goldwasser of Upstate NY but stationed in Brooklyn– ok ok they also both went to Wesleyan, but I swear this isn’t bias speaking!). I approach MGMT with the same enthusiasm as my sentiment for The Knife 3 years ago. The difference is that MGMT possesses both the esoteric, unique, and obscure brilliance of The Knife while bringing something of a pop and 70s mystic rock element that makes it marketable to those who felt the Knife was just a little too…. Weird? On myspace, you can find MGMT at, you guessed it, www.myspace.com/mgmt where you’ll see that their genre is decidedly “Surf/Jungle/Country”. My point exactly. Check out some of their new tracks on myspace, and you can listen to their 2005 EP, Time To Pretend, on iTunes. However, I’d go so far as to say that you can check them out now or not, but there is no doubt you’ll be hearing them soon. MGMT is on it’s way up, and you best be ready.

Though my amateur camera and photography skills do them no justice, here are a couple pics I took at their show last week in Brooklyn at Glasslands
