Welcome to the Freshmen blog, guys. We’re back in the studios now after two weeks from Spring break, and there is plenty of good music going down in the NYC area these days.
Just last night, I went to the recording space of Led Zeppelin tribute band, Lez Zeppelin. Four women make up the roster for this outfit, and they give the original Zeppelin a run for their money with guitar solos, strong base lines and drumming, and an extremely vivacious and talented lead singer, Sarah McLellan. They’re performing this Saturday night at Irving Plaza, so you might want to check that out if you’re around…
In the meantime, make sure you check out R.E.M.’s 14th studio album, Accelerate, which is to be released in just a few days.
Now onto videos… check out Yeasayer’s “Wait For The Summer,” Cut Copy’s “Lights and Music,” and of course, if you haven’t yet, MGMT’s “Time to Pretend.”
New bands and/or tracks to listen to for the week: Ghostland Observatory; Bon Iver; Dirty Projectors; A Place to Bury Strangers; Beach House’s new album, Devotion; Kraftwerk’s track, “The Telephone Call”; The Teenagers’ “Feeling Better”; and Ladytron’s “Black Cat”, which is off their newest album, Velocifero, (which is set for a June release). Ladytron hasn’t come out with anything new since their much acclaimed album, Witching Hour, back in 2005.
And, if you’re a fan of MGMT, the Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, or Yeasayer, you’re going to want to check out the Brooklyn Bands piece, created a few months ago, but still relevant. Click here to read the story
