I can so agree with that, haha
i saw the beginning of the Black Keys Video and i was flipping out because it was so cool….
but song wise….it wasnt soo good
I know it’s out of my little emo box, but I think The Black Keys really hit a home run with this video. They’re extraordinarily talented and it’s good to see them catching on a bit.
yeah, i think the black keys definitely hit both an interesting/unique and mainstream vibe. they have what it takes to be respected and liked by a lot of different music communities, so in that sense, they are going to be really marketable.
AH! My favorite word, Kim: Marketable. I feel like lately there’s been a huge rift between what’s considered “marketable” and what is considered “good.” A lot of people automatically assume that once something is mainstream it sucks…but I feel like that’s just not the case anymore. Pop music has changed over the last few years, and there’s plenty of good music that can be considered “marketable.” Am I right? Can good music be marketable and can marketable music be good?
Jonathan Clay was great, the Myriad is surprisingly refreshing, De Novo Dahl yells too much without offering something beyond the box, I definitely expected more from The Black Keys despite a great video concept, and there was something magical about Kate Walsh even though she’s the baby version of people like a Fine Frenzy and Renee Stahl (What’s up with you Mallory? there’s NEVER too much singer/songwriter representation!)
Thank god I didn’t do this show; you Black Keys fans would have castrated me. I’d say Jonathan Clay and Kate Walsh split the vote for me. The Myriad comes somewhere close.
Sara, De Novo Dahl? When we meet on the set today, i’ll fight you. with lasers.

Jonathan Clay made me think of what Justin Timberlake would do if he played the acoustic guitar. De Novo Dahl definetly not for me. The Black Keys are the only modern band that I’m a real fan of. I love just about every song on all their first 4 cds. However, to change things up a bit and maybe to please some of the pop fans they let a producer control some of their sound for the first time and they aren’t playing their usual blues numbers. I still like the new album and I think “Lies” is the best song on the album. Actually I think their are arguably 3 or 4 better songs on the album than “Strange Times”. Overall I like the song and the video is cool, but if I was to play a couple songs that represented TBK I wouldn’t play this one.
I appreciate the fan love I am getting on this blog! hah
Looking at the videos a second time made me question why we were so hard on Jonathan Clay. Although it might not be a favorite of those who prefer a more avant-garde indie sound he proved to be a talented musician. He created a unique sound by mixing his acoustics with the electric guitar break in the middle of the song. It was something different and made his video and song stand out among the many musicians who rely on the backing of a band.
However, I would never change my vote. The Black Keys definitely dominated this week and laser tags will always be awesome.
um, did anyone else think “hot redhead from grey’s anatomy” when they heard the name kate walsh? funny, too, because her track would fit perfectly on a grey’s soundtrack. cute song.
i couldn’t stop smiling during de novo dahl’s “shout” (and i’ll probably be searching for their album tomorrow), but the black keys had an incredible video - it won my vote. looking forward to seeing them at ACL in september.
james: i do believe good music CAN be marketable, and vice versa - but i think we should actually be asking if good music IS marketable, etc etc. i certainly don’t think those qualities are mutually exclusive. then again, we’d have to determine what your definition of “good” is.. and then the discussion would never end. you made a good point, though.

The Black Keys video is awesome! Too bad they can’t use their lasers on Kate Walsh.

We’re entitled to differences of opinion. I actually picked De Novo Dahl as my fav but the concept of the lasers is still NUTS!!
